Single Room Occupancy

The expression "single room occupancy" or more commonly "SRO", refers to a residential building that provides a small (on average 140 square feet) private room for one individual. Each room is usually furnished with a bed, chair, dresser and a closet. Common or shared spaces are bathrooms, living rooms, kitchens, laundry facilities, and meeting rooms.

Services:

In each of its SRO's CCHO provides case management services, a site manager, a food program serving 3 meals a day 7 days a week, maintenance services, and 24/7 staffing. CCHO employs a tenant empowerment model whereby our tenants become staff working in various capacities in the buildings.

Waldorf Residence

The Waldorf Residence was rehabilitated and opened as a 46 unit SRO in 1994. Since that time over 400 people have made the Waldorf their home, some for a short-time while they get re-established and others for many years.

The Waldorf residence is a Section 8 mod rehab building in addition to being a Low Income Housing Tax Credit project. Applicants must therefore be low income, the great majority of tenants come from emergency shelters or precarious housing situations.

St. Peter's Residence
bullet   St. Peter's Residence in Troy is located in what was formerly the elementary school "St. Peter's". Housing 35 individuals tenants rooms still have blackboards and two current tenants attended St. Peter's as pupils.

Many wonder about the Latin words over the entrance to St. Peter's Residence: “Spes Messis” – it is a shortened form of the Latin saying Spes Messis in Semine, which translates to:

“The hope of the harvest is in the sowing of the seed”

The 50 unit DePaul Residence has recently become a project based Section 8 building and is also a Low Income Housing Tax Credit building.

Formerly the old DMV building for Albany it was rehabbed in the 1990's when the second floor was added and the first floor was reconfigured to create larger rooms and common areas.

Swyer

Named after the late developer Lewis Swyer, the Swyer Residence opened in 1989 as CCHO's smallest SRO. With 5 units this building is more homelike than the larger SRO's. It is also the most independent project. Each of the low income tenants works and has graduated through other CCHO housing to live here.

Located in a neighborhood of family houses, renters and students near the College of Saint Rose this housing is central to all services.
